ISLAMABAD: A Pakistan Army Aviation Mi-17 helicopter crashed near Muzaffarabad on Wednesday after reportedly developing a technical fault during take-off, resulting in the martyrdom of all personnel on board. The tragic incident was confirmed by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), which stated that the helicopter encountered a technical malfunction shortly after initiating take-off procedures. According to the military’s media wing, there were no survivors in the crash.

Technical Fault Reportedly Caused Accident

In an official statement, the ISPR said the Mi-17 helicopter suffered a technical fault during take-off, leading to the fatal crash near Muzaffarabad. Rescue and recovery teams were immediately dispatched to the crash site following the incident. Military authorities have since secured the area and begun recovery operations.

The ISPR further announced that a board of inquiry has been constituted to determine the exact cause of the accident and investigate the technical circumstances that led to the crash.

Military Leadership Expresses Grief

Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, along with officers and soldiers of the Pakistan Army, expressed profound sorrow over the loss of the personnel who embraced martyrdom in the line of duty.

The military leadership extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and paid tribute to their service and sacrifice for the nation.

President and Prime Minister Offer Condolences

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also expressed deep grief over the tragedy. In separate messages, both leaders conveyed their sympathies to the bereaved families and honored the sacrifices of the military personnel who lost their lives in the crash.

President Zardari stated that the entire nation stands with the families of the martyrs during this difficult time and pays tribute to their service and dedication. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also saluted the sacrifices of the fallen personnel, emphasizing that the nation remains grateful for the courage and commitment demonstrated by Pakistan’s armed forces.

Both leaders prayed for the elevation of the martyrs’ ranks and for strength and patience for their families.

Recent Aviation Accident

The crash marks another tragic loss for Pakistan Army Aviation. In September 2025, five military personnel were martyred when an Army helicopter crashed in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan following a reported technical fault.

Military aviation safety investigations continue to play a critical role in identifying mechanical issues and improving operational procedures to prevent future accidents. Further details regarding the identities of the martyrs and the findings of the inquiry are expected to be released following the completion of the investigation.
