Azerbaijan has officially confirmed that its JF-17C Block III multirole fighter aircraft have entered operational service, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of the Azerbaijani Air Force and a major achievement for the jointly developed Pakistan-China combat aircraft. The confirmation came after Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defence released official footage showing the fighters operating from Nasosnaya Air Base, providing the first public confirmation that the aircraft are now in active service.
The aircraft featured in the footage were identified as JF-17C Block III variants, the most advanced version of the Thunder family. The fighters were seen conducting flight operations, with pilots wearing insignia identifying the aircraft as Azerbaijan’s newest frontline combat platform. The confirmation follows the delivery of the initial batch of aircraft under a broader acquisition program.
Azerbaijan’s procurement of the JF-17 represents one of Pakistan’s largest-ever defense export successes. The broader agreement, expanded in 2025, calls for the delivery of 40 JF-17 Block III fighters, along with pilot training, maintenance support, and associated weapon systems, making Azerbaijan the largest international operator of the aircraft outside Pakistan.
The new JF-17C fighter jets of the Azerbaijani Air Force have been spotted.
According to the new images, it is estimated that the JF-17s with tail numbers 24-501, 24-502, 24-503, 24-504, 24-506, 20-513 and 20-515 have been delivered to Azerbaijan.

The JF-17 Block III incorporates significant upgrades over earlier variants, including an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, an advanced electronic warfare suite, a helmet-mounted display system, modern avionics, and compatibility with long-range beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles. These enhancements provide improved situational awareness, greater survivability, and enhanced multirole combat capability.
For Azerbaijan, the induction of the JF-17 Block III is expected to substantially strengthen its air combat capability by introducing a modern fourth-generation-plus fighter that complements and gradually supplements its existing fleet of MiG-29 aircraft. The new platform also offers expanded precision-strike, air-defense, and network-centric warfare capabilities.
The confirmation is equally significant for Pakistan’s defense industry. Developed jointly by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and China’s Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC), the JF-17 Thunder has become the flagship export product of Pakistan’s aerospace sector. Azerbaijan joins Myanmar and Nigeria as an export operator, while its large order reinforces the aircraft’s position in the global lightweight fighter market.

Defense analysts believe the aircraft’s operational debut in Azerbaijani service will be closely watched by prospective customers evaluating affordable multirole fighters. As deliveries continue, the JF-17 Block III is expected to play an increasingly prominent role in Azerbaijan’s airpower modernization while further strengthening defense cooperation between Baku, Islamabad, and Beijing.
